I knew it was a short story and that it was a 'thriller', but that was all I payed any attention to.
Wow. It was something.

Before I get too far ahead of myself, I should mention that all I normally read are Christian books - thrillers, mystery, fantasy, whatever. . . They are all by Christian authors. Serial isn't like that, and it was evident when the killer started raping his victim.
I'll grant you that there are plenty of serial killers who do despicable, horrible things to their victims (Dahmer, anyone?), but that;s not something I want to relax to. I'm all for horrific, painful deaths and sadistic twists that make your stomach turn, but I don't want anything like rape to enter the picture.

But, what's done is done.

What really freaked me out with this story is that I had an idea for a book that I have been working on for a while now, and as I read this short, it was like the two authors had heard my thoughts. They were implementing a version of my idea! It was weird.
I can't say what my idea was because that would ruin the book, but suffice it to say I was a bit disappointed.

The book itself wasn't very well written. It appeared to be tossed together, although I liked chapter 2 better than chapters 1 or 3.
Yes, this book is only 3 chapters long. It took me a total of 15 minutes to get through it, and that was with me reading it at work.

If you like über secular thrillers, or very short books that don't involve much thought, Serial could be for you. Personally, I may not ever read it again, and that wouldn't hurt me a bit.

I downloaded Serial for free through Kindle. It wasn't part of any promotion, just go to Amazon's Kindle section and set the list order to "price: low to high" and you should be able to find it there for free.

The Holiness of God

By R. C. Sproul

How do you define holy? What is holy to you? When something is made holy, how does that affect how you perceive it? More importantly, if God is holy, what does that do to us?

In The Holiness of God, Sproul answers these questions of mine and, in so doing, he blew my mind away time and time again. With the turning of each page I found myself utterly wasted at the thought of what true holiness is and how we respond to it. Isaiah needed to have his lips cleansed by fire in order to speak to a Holy God; the Seraphim that surround Him cover their feet signifying their created status in the midst of a Holy God; and Paul the Apostle was thrown down and struck blind when God revealed just a portion of His Holiness.

Yet we can't be bothered to speak a simple prayer of thanks for His provision when we eat.

This book truly caused me to take a good, hard long look at what I always thought about God and His majesty, and has forced me to see my own unholiness in the face of a Holy God. Todd Agnew mentioned that this was a free Kindle eBook and I couldn't resist snatching it up - I am so glad I did! The reality of the purity of God simply never crossed my mind before. Sproul has a way of taking the obvious and turning your attention to it in a way that makes it undeniable.

Every believer needs to read this book!

The Scroll

By: Grant R Jeffrey and Alton L Gansky
WaterBrook Publishing

Dr. David Chambers, leading archaeologist, has spent his professional career uncovering the facts in the artifacts. His work sets the standard for biblical research in the Holy Land. But surrounded by the evidence, David has sunk into an abyss of doubt. A painful experience with a seemingly unresponsive God has left him without hope. The Old Testament scriptures that used to fill his mind with wonder now drive him to frustration. His unanswered questions have ripped him from both his academic pursuits and the love of his life, his fiancée, Amber. An old friend and mentor reaches out to David, enticing him with the riches described in the enigmatic Copper Scroll. Losing ground with his peers, his love, and his faith, David Chambers has a choice to make. Will he undertake one final dig to unlock a secret that could alter the course of history? Do the mysteries of the Old Testament hold the key to the political turmoil of the Middle East? In a world where faith has been eclipsed by the allure of doubt, The Scroll offers a different journey: a gripping adventure to find truth worth dying for.

I don't know why I got this book other than a weakness for all things historical. Granted I prefer actual history over novel history, but I digress. The concept of a "treasure hunt" through Israel was intriguing enough and it piqued my curiosity to try out a new author. I had no idea just what I was getting myself into.
The tag team of Jeffrey and Gansky provided an escape well worth the time investment.

David Chambers is an archaeologist with a problem: though he won't admit it he's still in love with a woman whose very presence reminds him of a past he'd rather forget. An opportunity arises to embark on a ground-breaking new project, but the rub is that it's in a field that he is trying desperately to remove himself from because he has lost his once vibrant faith. He decides to accept his role in this new project after a visit from his mentor and father-figure, only to find that the former love of his life is involved in the project as well. Not only that, but so is her new love interest - and the new guy is making his presence, not to mention his intentions, known to everyone. The Scroll follows Chambers as he is forced to face his past and consider that what he has known may not be the entire truth - all the while dealing with new challenges as the Arab-Israeli tensions over Jerusalem mount.
The climax is something you can see coming, but you can hardly believe it when it arrives.

Overall, The Scroll is a fairly well written book. Oddly enough, I found a spelling error or two, but I don't count that against the authors or the story, it was simply bad editing. The storyline is compelling and it certainly became a page turner once I got into the characters. Jeffrey and Grant developed a quality main character whose struggle can relate to everyone. The inner turmoil that he feels is basic to everyone as he copes with death, life, change, and love. The build up toward the end will keep you turning the page as you come closer and closer to the end, however the set-up for a sequel is predictable, and that was the only downer about the entire novel. I'm sure a sequel can be well written, and I am excited to see it when it comes, but The Scroll is perfect as a stand-alone novel.

All in all, The Scroll is a good book. I would certainly recommend it to anyone that likes to read stories that revolve around Israel or archeology. If you want a laid-back, easy read, you might want to bypass this one.

I was given a copy of The Scroll for free as part of WaterBrook Multnomah's book blogger program. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.

The Love And Respect Experience

A Husband-Friendly Devotional that Wives Truly Love
By: Dr. Emerson Eggerichs

I did something before getting this book that I try to never do until after I have finished reading it: I read a review. Even worse, I read a negative review. I read this particular review for a couple of reasons, not the least of which was sheer curiosity. You see, I have read Dr. Eggerichs book Love And Respect, and it was truly wonderful. In my mind, I couldn't see anyone disliking the knowledge gleaned from his books. After reading a paragraph of that review, I realized that the reviewer didn't understand the material presented, nor would he ever appreciate the changes that the principles behind Love And Respect can bring. I knew then that I needed to read this book.

I was not disappointed in the least. The Love And Respect Experience is a devotional book for couples. It has 52 chapters - so it's not a daily devotional - and each chapter is a nice review of the principles that Dr. Eggerichs has previously laid out in the Love And Respect book, however, you don't have to have already read Love And Respect to get the concept (although it certainly helps).

This book is billed as a "husband-friendly devotional", and that much is almost true. There are a lot of discussion questions that are written more to engage the wives than get the husbands talking. Each question at the end of the chapter is more like question sets than simple queries. I found myself breaking each question set down and tackling the questions within each point one at a time. It is infinitely more husband friendly than most marriage devotionals, but it has some room to grow.

The actual book itself is beautifully made, with a striking leather cover that makes me want to read it. The chapters are easy to follow, and the action items are simple and direct.

This is a fantastic workbook to go along with the book Love and Respect, but even if you don't have the original book, this is still a phenomenal read. I highly recommend this book to everyone!

I received this book for free as a part of the Booksneeze book blogger program. Rosenberg
Tyndale Publishing

The world is on the brink of disaster. Iran has just conducted its first atomic weapons test. Millions of Muslims around the world are convinced their messiah — known as the Twelfth Imam — has arrived on earth. Israeli leaders fear Tehran, under the Twelfth Imam’s spell, will soon launch a nuclear attack that could bring about a second Holocaust and the annihilation of Israel. The White House fears Jerusalem will strike first, launching a massive preemptive attack against Iran’s nuclear facilities that could cause the entire Middle East to go up in flames, oil prices to skyrocket, and the global economy to collapse. With the stakes high and few viable options left, the president of the United States orders CIA operative David Shirazi and his team to track down and sabotage Iran’s nuclear warheads before Iran or Israel can launch a devastating first strike. But will they be too late?

The Tehran Initiative is the continuing saga of David Shirazi as an agent of the CIA, and it follows his deep incursions into Iran as he seeks out the locations of 8 Iranian nuclear warheads. The world is literally on the verge of self-destruction that will be brought on by either Iran or Israel -- the question is who will launch a first strike. David needs to keep his head clear and in the game despite dealing with the impending loss of his mother, and the resurgence of feelings for a long lost love. Added into the mix is the reality of Christ and who He is, and The Tehran Initiative becomes a non-stop story of action, intrigue, hope, and faith that keeps you turning the pages quickly in order to keep up.

The book itself is, of course, incredibly well written. Rosenberg does an exquisite job of making the story realistic, while not allowing his readers to get lost in the terminology. Because of the subject matter, it's easy to get lost in a series of acronyms and not fully understand the scene. Personally, I found myself interjecting the acronyms when I knew what they were, and learning new ones as they came my way.
The characters are well developed and, even if you haven't read The Twelfth Imam, their motivations are easily understood. Because The Tehran Initiative is a sequel, there is the danger of being forced to re-develop your characters for new readers who are unfamiliar with the previous story, but Rosenberg makes sure that all the relevant information is reviewed in such a way that you are thankful for the quick re-cap - even if you've read the previous book.

It has been said of Rosenberg's work that he writes tomorrows headlines, and I have to say that this is absolutely true! I remember reading a scene in The Tehran Initiative that described the President exiting Air Force One with a contingent of national leaders from Israel and Egypt, and the next day I was watching video of the President and a number of other people in suits (aside from the Secret Service) as they exited Air Force One. It was freaky, but not as freaky as reading Rosenberg's story line of several Iranian battleships heading through the Suez Canal with two of them carrying nuclear weapons, and then reading about actual Iranian battleships travelling through the Suez Canal that very same day. Indeed, Rosenberg writes tomorrow's headlines.

All in all, if you like a great story, filled with suspense, action, and unlikely twists that have the ability to blow your mind, The Tehran Initiative is the book for you. You don't have to read The Twelfth Imam to understand what is happening in The Tehran Initiative, but I highly suggest reading them both. Each one of them is a roller coaster ride all it's own.

watch on tyndale.com

FTC Disclosure: I received The Tehran Initiative for free as part of the Tyndale Publisher book blogger program. Using Greg's communication cues, you'll be blown away by what you'll learn about your child, and how you can make a powerful, lasting difference - especially during her rocky teenage years.
Daddy Dates is about one thing - Becoming her hero, one date at a time.

Fatherhood is something that can be terrifying. The realization that you are responsible for another life carries with it an inherent command: Don't screw up! The reality of fatherhood of daughters can be even more frightening. After all, we know what it's like to be a little boy, so we have some sort of idea of how to raise a boy. Girls have always been a mystery to us, and they always will be, so the idea of raising a child that we know nothing about is scary.Greg sums up our worst fears in the second paragraph of the Prologue: Whatever you do, don't screw this up, dude.

The book itself is very well written and flows effortlessly from one idea to the other. The chapters are clear, concise, and short - the entire book is 214 pages including the acknowledgement - yet the author dives deep into a topic that demands our attention. His wit and wisdom create a fitting backdrop to present a sort of how-to that isn't really a how-to book. This book takes you on the journey of a lifetime as you follow a dad who has stumbled upon an incredible method of parenting for girls: dating.

Studies have shown that girls who have fathers who play an integral role in their lives grow up to be more balanced, confident, and take charge. Teen pregnancy, poverty, and poor education have all been linked to absent fathers. Men, it's time to step up and be the men that we need to be to our women, including our daughters. It's not good enough to provide the food, clothing, and roof over their head. The government can do that. We need to be better than that. If we don't take the steps necessary to become the best father we can be, we are shortchanging our daughter, their children, and untold generations to come.

I highly encourage all men, everywhere to read this book. Wives, mothers, girlfriends - you want your man to read this book. Trust me.You owe it to your daughters.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze.com book review bloggers program. What does the Bible really say about hell?”
In Hell, Rob Bell, and What Happens When People Die, Dr. Bobby Conway brings clarity to these serious life and death issues. “Love really does win,” according to Conway, “but it’s through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.”
Based on a thorough examination of Scripture and a careful analysis of Rob Bell’s propositions, Conway delivers a compelling and concise explanation of hell, the afterlife, and a loving God. The conclusion: Everyone who believes and trusts in Christ has no need to fear the anguish of hell but can confidently anticipate the eternal joy of heaven.

Hell is a topic that not too many people like to touch these days. Any why would they? The thought of a loving God who created a place of eternal punishment isn't exactly an easy sell - but regardless of it's popularity, the subject of Hell needs to be broached.
Mega-church pastor Rob Bell finally spoke up on his ideas about hell in the 2011 book "Love Wins". In this book, Bell approached the topic of Hell in, what was billed as, a 'fresh, alternative fashion'. What it really was has become the object of heated debate among apologists and Universalists alike: universal salvation, regardless of heart condition.
To be fair, it is a very seductive story: all will eventually have their heart melted and come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, but it's not supported by scripture, as Bell claims. This book by Dr. Conway exposes the truth of 'Love Wins' and Bell's errant theology.

As a book itself, it is very well written. Conway dives deep into a confusing topic and surfaces with clarity of speech and presents evidence that contradicts Bell's offering with startling accuracy. Conway moves very quickly, yet thoroughly through the chapters of 'Who deserves hell', 'Hell's architect', and 'Why "good people" go to hell' - all without losing the main train of thought. His careful notes and links to external sources are a God-send (pun intended) for anyone who finds themselves in the unfortunate position of defending the Biblical portrayal of hell. His internet resources only add to his credibility and reputation as a respected apologist.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who desires to know the truth about hell and it's future inhabitants. If Rob Bell has muddied the issue for you, get this book!

I received this book for free as part of Mulnomah's blogging for books program. Having escaped his clutches, she now lives only to satisfy justice by destroying him, regardless of whom she must become in that pursuit.
But when Danny and Renee's paths become inexorably entangled things go very, very badly and neither of them may make it out of this hunt alive.

If you read through this blog, you will see that I am a fan of Ted DekKer. In fact, his work is the reason I even started this blog in the first place. His books have pulled me in and set me into a place of truly loving the written word. Because of that, I get excited when I see a new book from DekKer. The Priest's Graveyard is no exception. DekKer has such a masterful way of drawing the reader into the story that you literally become the character, and experience what they feel. The one thing that will never cease to amaze me is DekKer's uncanny ability to create a twist that is unforeseen. After having read 20 DekKer titles, I still didn't see this twist coming!

The story itself is incredibly well written. Not once did he ever lose me, nor did any scene falter in it's realism. I truly felt the character's passion and disgust, love and hate, euphoria and sorrow. At a scant 360 pages, it's shorter than a typical DekKer novel, and this is sad because the pages fly quickly.

I am always impressed with the different ways that DekKer approaches love. He seems to find it everywhere, in every scenario, and in every person he sees. The Priest's Graveyard takes that to a place I never would have suspected. I think we all have a little bit of Renee's tendencies when it comes to love, it's just that ours are more hidden than most. I would really love to delve into the topic and explore how we are similar, but that would give everything away. You'll just have to read the story to find out.

If you love thrillers, get this book.
If you love love stories, get this book.
If you love action, get this book.
If you love the written word, get this book!

Average Joe

by Troy Meeder
Multnomah Books

What is happening to my life? Have you ever honestly asked yourself that question? As young boys, we dreamed of being pilots firefighters, doctors, and cowboys. Now we're older, with a wonderful wife and kids, as well as a mortgage, a minivan, and a fulfilling but not-so-glamorous job. What happened. All the dreams that once inspired us have evaporated into traffic jams, computer screens, bills and deadlines. Why is life so ordinary?

If you think your life is nothing special, take a look at it through God's eyes.

I have to admit, when I got this book I was ready to tear it apart. I had just finished reading a bunch of books like Wild at Heart, Life without Limits, and outlive your life. I wasn't really ready to read a book that seemed to glorify average. The tagline of the book is "God's extraordinary calling to ordinary men" and that read to me that we are all normal and boring.

Boy, was I surprised.

Troy Meeder takes us through a journey in his own life - a journey of discovery and revelation that, even though you may not be an astronaut, rock star, or famous A-list movie star, you still have the ability to be an extraordinary man.

Throughout the book, Meeder recounts story after story of seemingly ordinary men being extraordinary - even if it is in ways that the world will never see. The gentle strength of his grandfather guiding their boat during a horrendous storm, the gardener who taught him honesty and integrity, and the December fishing trip with an old friend out on a lake where Troy learned the meaning of humility and putting others first. Not a single one of these men will ever be remembered by society at large, but each one of these men are incredible and far beyond average.

Meeder, although I don't think it was his intent, shows us that you are only average if you choose to be and that these men chose to live a lifestyle that the world doesn't promote, yet is sorely needed today: Honestly, integrity, humility, fairness, strength, and calm.

The author's writing style is engaging, and his chapters are short. This is an excellent read if you don't have a lot of time or if you don't want to get caught up in a lengthy book. Meeder's short, sweet, and to the point analogies and stories being the focus back to his true intent: revealing that, though we may be 'average' as the world labels us, we all have the ability to be a superstar to someone.

I highly recommend this book. If you are a man searching for meaning to what you consider to be a dreary life, you definitely need to read this. If you are married to a wonderful man who may not be able to see himself the way you see him, get him this book. Yet that turning point was preceeded by years of searching -- and a moment of pure awakening. Little did she know that her one decision would turn into a national news story or that she'd immediately go from being a leader for Planned Parenthood to being a very public figure in the right-to-life debate.

The story of Abby Johnson is one that many people can relate to. Her classic upbringing creates a stark contrast with the career she eventually chose -- yet it's the transition from a Baptist background to running a Planned Parenthood clinic that is the most startling thing. It all happened as the result of a series if choices led her to an ultimate decision that changed the course of her life. Unplanned is based on the book that Abby wrote about her transformation from Pro-Choice to Pro-Life, and the resulting fallout from her previous employer.

This DVD is dramatic in its scope, content, and characters. Abby, herself, tells most of the story, with a few family members chiming in with their thoughts and impressions. The cinematography is outstanding and the visuals truly enhance the story throughout. Somehow, they managed to cram a story that took eight years to unfold into a 60 minute film, and it is magnficent.

If you have any questions about Planned Parenthood and what they do, you need to see this film.
If you think you know what Planned Parenthood is about, you need to see this film.
If you are on either side of the Abortion debate, YOU NEED TO SEE THIS FILM.

This is a story that needs to be proclaimed from the rooftops. You need to see this film.

I reviewed this DVD as a part of the Tyndale Publishers Blog tour. Real, important, and challenging questions. Questions about sex, finances, and forgiveness. Unsettling questions regarding illness, suicide, and eternity. Don't we crave answers to these queries that tug on the deepest parts of our hearts?
Do angels really walk among us?
How should I discipline my kids?
Any advice for my struggling marriage?
Why do I worry so much?
How do I know what God's will for me really is?
In Max On Life, one of the most trusted pastors and authors of our time takes on life's most important questions. Max Lucado has received thousands of questions and wrestle with plenty of his own. Here's hoping that his answers to the questions of others will help you find answers to yours.

I initially wanted to read this book because I love Lucado's writings. His books "Outlive Your Life" and "Fearless" are incredible books that get to the heart of living a life beyond what you can imagine. Lucado's writing style is very personal, yet he gets straight to the point without adding a lot of fluff -- mainly, because there is no need for it. Max On Life is an intimate time of questions and answers with one of America's most trusted authors. Max goes through honest, real questions that have been posed to him and takes his time in responding. You aren't going to get trite, "Christianese" answers in this book.

Max On Life covers questions that not too many people feel comfortable answering, but almost all of us, at one time or another, have had these questions burning on our hearts. Lucado answers questions about salvation, sin, and the existence of God -- all without injecting any doctrine other than Christ. His boldness in responding to questions that truly shake the faith foundations of others is striking and it brings relief to know that there is someone who has taken the time to find the answers, back it up scripturally, and lay it all out on the table.

You may not like what you read, you may love what you read, but rest assured Lucado goes out of his way to expose truth with an honesty that many might find unnerving. After all, questions about sex, finances, homosexuality, human suffering, the afterlife, and our purpose in life are not simple things.

If you have questions about the faith, or if you engage in conversations with people who have questions, I highly recommend getting this book and meditating on the information within it.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze.com book review bloggers program. The most intimate act between a man and a woman is prayer. And praying daily with the one person you love more than any other takes you to a level of joy and satisfaction that you simply will not believe until you try it.
Author of the bestseller When God Winks At You, SQuire Rushnell, and his wife, entertainer and talk-show host Louise DuArt, know first-hand what praying together as a couple can do. They were amazed at the happiness and harmony this simple act brought to their relationship. Couples Who Pray has everything you and your partner need to begin a more intimate, rewarding relationship, including simple tips that can make your marriage the best it's ever been!

When my wife and I got married, we decided to get some marriage books -- not because our marriage was off to a bad start, but we realized that any good thing can still be better. Fast forward five years and our marriage is better than ever, but we still look for marriage books that can help us improve in areas that we may have never even thought about. Couples Who Pray is a book that touches on an area that we never really developed in our marriage (much to my wife's chagrin), so I thought that this would be a good book to review.

Cracking it open, I found that the authors are quite adept at Public Relations. Much of the book is telling you how great your marriage will be and can be as long as you get the principles they are going to tell you. They even appeal to the baser instincts of men by assuring men that once they start the 40 day prayer challenge, they will find that their sex lives even improve. When they finally do get to the point, it isn't anywhere near as sensational as the previous chapters make it out to be -- which is the way of all truth: it isn't sensational, it's just true. I can break it all down to some very simple paragraphs:
Men, when you pray with your wives, you are opening up to them in ways that your wives need. As you pray, you talk to God as your best friend (which He is), and your wife gets to listen in. This is exactly what she needs to feel connected to you. She is hearing your most intimate thoughts, feelings, and emotions, and she is sharing in your struggles. Just five minutes a day is all you need. Just pray with her for five minutes a day and your marriage will change - guaranteed.
Women, gently suggest that your husbands read this book. Don't shove it at them and tell them to read it, simply suggest that they might want to take a look at it. You should read it as well, even if they don't want to. You will understand the dynamics of your relationship in a whole different light after reading Couples Who Pray.

As for the writing itself, well, I already mentioned that the husband and wife author team are great PR people. It's easy to read, and the premise catches your attention. I recommend this book to anyone who has issues praying as a couple, or anyone who wants to better their relationship. The thing is, as with everything else in marriage, both people have to want it. You cannot push a prayer life onto anyone, so don't even try. But you can suggest this book and make it available if they want to check it out.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze.com book review bloggers program. Now an internationally successful motivational speaker, Nick spreads his central message: the most important goal for anyone is to find their life's purpose despite whatever difficulties or seemingly impossible odds stand in their way.

I'm not one for motivational books, but I just had to read this one. I have seen several of Nick Vujicic's videos on YouTube and I knew that his story was one of incredible adversity and even greater triumph, but I had no idea as to the extent of either.
This book is completely autobiographical -- written by a man without any arms or legs -- and his challenges are strikingly similar to the average person. In fact, he mentions several times that he has seen people that are far worse off than he is, and they have all of their limbs.

Well written and riddled with humor, Life Without Limits truly shows you that there are NO limits to what you can accomplish with God on your side. The tag line for the book is "Inspiration for a ridiculously good life", and it truly delivers. Nick shares his inspiration and how he handles things that would cause most people to give up. He shares his personal struggles, in such a way that you truly do feel everything that he feels. You can feel the same humiliation as he is teased as a child, to the incredible euphoria as he triumphs over challenge after challenge -- including winning in a fist-fight.

I challenge you to read Life Without Limits and not be inspired to rise above where you are. After all, if a man with no arms or legs can get up from falling on the floor, type 40 words a minute, answer his cell phone, live on his own with no assistance, and surf by himself, you can do anything!

I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah. Lewis's classic Chronicles of Narnia - but some questions have never been successfully answered. Why are there seven books? Why are only three of them obvious Biblical allegories? Does the series lack coherence, as Lewis's critics (and even some of his friends) claimed? Many have attempted to discover the organizing key - the "secret code" - of the series, but the structure of Narnia's symbolism has remained a mystery.
Until now.
In The Narnia Code, Michael Ward presents an astonishing literary discovery. Drawing on the whole range of Lewis's writings, Ward reveals the single subject that provides the link between all seven novels. He explains how Lewis structured the series, why he kept the code secret, and what it shows about his understanding of the universe and the Christian faith.

Admittedly, I have never read any of the Chronicles of Narnia. In fact, my only experience with C.S. Lewis' iconic tale has been through Disney's adaptation of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, and Prince Caspian. Sadly, I have yet to see the Voyage of the Dawn Treader, though I hope to remedy that situation soon. However, that handicap did not prevent me from fully enjoying Ward's exegeses of Lewis' works.

When I first got this book, I was concerned that this was going to be nothing but a witch hunt. Something akin to finding that Lewis wasn't really modeling Aslan as the Christ figure and that the entire collection of novels was simply a ruse for Lewis' secret astrological machinations. I was delightfully wrong. Ward pulls from various works of C.S. Lewis to build a solid foundation for the uniting factor between all seven books: Lewis' day job. You see, C.S. Lewis was a professor at Oxford University for thirty years, and he spent nearly ten more years at Cambridge University. His principal field of academic interest was the literature of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. I won't give away the crux of the argument, but the uniting factor has to do with pre-Copernican astronomy. Seven planets. Seven novels. Mystery revealed!

Ward moves effortlessly through all seven of the Chronicles of Narnia, exposing certain attributes in each novel as he goes, to build a solid case for his argument. It is an argument that I think is absolutely spot on and it adds a wonderful dimension to Lewis' series. So much so that I actually plan on tackling the entire series as soon as I can and, with Ward's discoveries solidly in mind, I think it will create a deeper experience for me as well.

If you are a fan of the Chronicles of Narnia, I highly recommend you get this book. It will open your eyes to a whole new world within Lewis' work.

I received this book as a free review copy from Tyndale House Publishing. I was not required to write a positive review, therefore the views expressed in this review are obviously my own.

The Bride Collector

By Ted DekKer

Center Street Publishers

A virtuoso killer is carving a path of death across the west, intent on killing only the most beautiful women, all in the name of love. He has claimed six victims and slipped through the FBI's fingers, each time leaving behind a handwritten note and a bridal veil.
Special agent Brad Raines has hunted the Bride Collector from crime scene to crime scene, but each time he finds himself one step behind. Desperate for help, Raines turns to the Center for Wellness and Intelligence, a private home for gifted, mentally ill residents. There he finds help in an unlikely group of four who eagerly agree to help him solve the case.
Raines is drawn to a young woman named Paradise who struggles with psychosis. As they grow closer, he begins to see the world through her eyes. Together, they enter the killer's deadly game and begin to close in. But like Paradise, the Bride Collector is supremely gifted and he has a distinct advantage: this is his game.
Now Paradise will be pushed beyond her limits. She will learn what it means to be beautiful and what it means to love, really love.

This is easily one of the best novels Ted DekKer has ever written. From the moment you crack the pages, you are immersed in the crime scene of a killer who has just performed his gruesome work: draining beautiful women of their blood while they are glued naked, all except for underwear and a veil, to a wall. Ted introduces Brad Raines, an FBI agent with a troubled past, as the main investigator in the Bride Collector murders. As the story moves on, we are introduced to a host of characters; Nikki, the leading forensic psychologist; Allison, the director of the Center for Wellness and Intelligence; Roudy, Paradise, Andrea, and Enrique (whom everyone called Casanova) -- all residents at CWI. DekKer weaves the story through intricate plot lines that bring the past to bear on Raines, Paradise, and the Bride Collector himself.

DekKer's innovative writing style is evident throughout this book that is destined to be a favorite of his numerous fans. The signature DekKer twist came a little earlier than I expected, and that was by design as he had a lot more to share with us and keep us guessing. There were some things that surprised me about this particular book, however: I saw some errors that slipped past DekKer. Minor things, things like a bullet count in a magazine and an error in logic as the Bride Collector snatched a victim from her home. They were very minimal, but for such an accomplished writer, they were very unusual to say the least.

DekKer attacks some very interesting themes in this book. Mental illness is something that we, as a society, seem to try and brush under the rug. The less we have to look at it, the better. In fact, DekKer brings this statistic to light: "State-by-state closure of state asylums and hospitals between 1960 and 1990 had flooded the streets with mentally ill patients who had no provider to take up their care or cause. Many, up to half by some estimates, wound up incarcerated." How many of these people just needed to have a little bit of actual care to make a positive rehabilitation effective in their lives? Most of the time, we treated the mentally ill with drugs or shock therapy. How many of them just needed redirection and focus of their feelings? This is the story that we find ourselves in. DekKer creates characters that are truly gifted -- even though society calls them crazy.

Through this book, DekKer creates a foundation for discussion on how we look at each other, and how we should look at ourselves. DekKer plumbs the depths of his character and forces us to take a look at ourselves. What really drives us? What really is the reason for why we do and don't do certain things? Who are we, really?

If you have never read a Ted DekKer book before, this is certainly an excellent book to start out with. If you have loved DekKer's writing for years you will NOT be disappointed with The Bride Collector. It's definitely a book I will be revisiting over and over again!

The Faith Of Ronald Reagan

by Mary Beth Brown

Thomas Nelson Publishing

With warmth and insight, this best-selling book by Mary Beth Brown delves into the spiritual journey of America's 40th President and offers profound stories of the provisions God made in Ronald Reagan's life - from first making it as an actor to eventually changing the face of politics and the world.
Supported by Ronald Reagan's own words and writings plus firsthand interviews with his family, friends, and co-workers, Brown weaves a magnificent story that inspires as it informs. Reagan's strong devotion to God will encourage believers to enter public service, allowing their faith to motivate their actions, and will draw focus to Christ's matchless sacrifice - forever near and dear to President Reagan's heart.

I was excited to receive this book because Reagan has always been somewhat of a hero to me. I grew up in the 1980's and I was able to witness one of the greatest President's in the history of the United States -- although I didn't realize it at the time. For me, growing up in the 80's was a time of invincibility for us as a nation. No one was better than the united States; an impression that was backed up by our victories in the Olympics in 1980 and 1984. I wasn't surprised when the United States Hockey team won against Russia in 1980 because -- well, that's what we did. We were America. We always won. We were the best. When I could understand the politics of the world, I understood that we had the greatest nation because we had the greatest leader in the world. That leader was Ronald Wilson Reagan.

This book is a terrific overview of Reagan's life, influences, and motivations leading him to the White House. Mary Beth Brown did a masterful job of going through the myriad source material to provide a solid foundation on which to prove the faith of Ronald Reagan. From his early years in church with his beloved mother Nelle, to his re-dedication to Christ after the assassination attempt on his life in 1981, Reagan lived a truly humble life that would boggle the minds of the politicians of today.

Although repetitive at times, The Faith Of Ronald Reagan is a must-have book for anyone who loved the man while in office, or anyone who wants to know what it truly takes to be a successful leader: humility, and a desire to serve - not *be* served.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze.com book review bloggers program. Lauryn McBride's family auction house has taken responsibility for the estate sale of one of the victims - the enigmatic Markus Chisom. Submerging herself in Chisom's beautiful but strange world, Lauryn welcomes the reprieve from watching Alzheimer's steal her father from her, piece by piece. She soon realizes that centuries-old secrets tie Abbey Hills to the Chisom estate and a mysterious evil will do anything to make sure those secrets stay hidden. Even the man who grew up loving her may not be able to protect Lauryn from danger.

I am not one for stories about vampires -- in fact, I find the topic somewhat ridiculous. That said, however, this was a story that I found intriguing. The basic concept is that a woman who is struggling with her own personal demons must now face the very physical, and visible, demons around her, all while the former love of her life tries desperately to win her affections back. I won't reveal anything more about the story, but I must admit that the plot is very well thought out. Tracey certainly did her homework on Alzheimer's and, for me, that brought an effectual touch of realism to the tale. So much so, in fact, that I had to put the book down a few times because it was too real. This book actually brought tears to my eyes as Lauryn walks through her father's battle with Alzheimer's and it forced me to revisit my own mother's struggle with that horrid disease. Needless to say, if you have had someone in your life deal with dementia, I would caution that it will bring those memories back. You will need to be prepared to face it.

On a lighter note, the depth of characters was amazing. Each chapter told a little bit more of Lauryn's story, and the chapters were well designed to bring all of the characters into focus as you found out their history. The twist towards the end was such that I saw a foretelling of it, but the reveal was much bigger than I anticipated. I was quite pleased with how the book ended and all of the pieces fell into place. Suddenly, things clicked, and I stepped back to see the entire puzzle that I had been doggedly working on.

The writing, sadly, was a bit vapid in places. It seemed as though the author was having an inner dialogue that she expected us to know and she would continue the story without really delving into scenes that could have been tremendous. I say could have because some spots felt rushed. There were a few times that I had to go back and re-read something to see who was talking and who they were referencing as it simply wasn't very clear. For example: at one point, two male characters were directed to leave the room with two female characters remaining in the room. Man #1 makes a comment to woman #1. Man #2 makes a comment as well, and we are told that he stormed out of the room. Suddenly, a conversation ensues between the two women that leads the reader to the conclusion that man #1 exited at some point, but it's not expressly stated when he left. It's not that we need to know how everything happens, but it would have been nice to see man #1 commenting to woman #1 "as he walked out the door to the car".

Other than a few arid places, this book was quite an enjoyable read. It's certainly not comparable to a DekKer or Peretti book, but I could see myself revisiting the town of Abbey Hills in the future. If you like stories about vampires, give Tandem a try.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review.

Then Sings My Soul: Special Edition

Robert J. Morgan
Thomas Nelson Publishing

Is there a festive season of the year that is complete without one of your favorite hymns? Not only do hymns connect you to great memories, but they also reveal the faith of those who lived throughout history. As Robert Morgan explored the stories behind some of the best loved hymns, he found fascinating accounts of tribulations, triumphs struggles, and hope - ordinary people who connected with God in amazing ways, sharing their experiences through song. Discover the inspiration behind your favorite hymns. Find new favorites as you relate to the people whose walk of faith led them to write these classic songs of praise. Share these stories with your family, friends, and church, and find more depth and meaning as you worship God through song.

I am the worship leader in my church and I really found this book to be incredible. The messages are short, sweet, and to the point, which makes it easier to fit them in between songs in a worship service -- and the stories themselves are a tremendous example of God's strength, provision, and providence. Some of the stories are more in-depth than others, but even the shorter ones are a spring-board for deeper, thought provoking questions.

The songs are broken up into categories: Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, Patriotic, and Other Favorites, so it is easy to find a song that fits the message being preached or the holiday that is approaching. They are also indexed by Title, Author/Songwriter, and by the first line of the hymn, so you can find just what you want even if you can't remember the title.

This book is an incredible collection of titles and stories. It is the perfect addition to any singer, songwriter, or worship leader's library, and I highly recommend it.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their BookSneeze.com book review bloggers program. Yarhouse, PsyD
Bethany House Publishers

Usually, I lead off a book review with the copy that is written on the back of the book as in introduction to the content that was reviewed. This is one book that doesn't need such an introduction.

Homosexuality is a controversial enough of a topic without adding the additional fuel of religion to the fire, but this is a subject that the church really needs to face, and face it head on. When I got this book, I was wary that the author may be coming at the reader with an agenda, thereby making this a very long read full of theological errors. Whenever you present a topic like this in a manner that predisposes one side over the other, you lose all credibility as well as any theological stability. The copy on the back of the book was very careful to not use specific language that would give away the bent of the author, so that left me with having to dive in unprepared for what I would face. For that, I was very thankful.

Within a chapter I found that Yarhouse, though careful in his presentation, was perfectly clear on his purpose: The church needs to change how they react to homosexuality. Right now, there are three types of people that read that last statement in two different ways. The first type of person is the Conservative Christian who reads that bold statement as a statement of activism of homosexuality and revision of church dogma and they reject it out of hand. The second type of person reads that statement and agrees that the church is too hard on homosexuality, and they believe that Scripture needs to be re-interpreted. After all, how can a loving Jesus reject people who are born that way? The third type of person reads that statement and agrees that the church needs to change because the church is becoming too accepting of homosexuality. Christians need to get back to the Old Testament and remove homosexuals from their midst. All three of these people have it completely wrong.

Yarhouse goes through the topic, step-by-step, and reveals the reality behind the homosexuality issue. He breaks down the concept of a gay identity and how that differs from same-sex attraction, and the choices that face the homosexual community. He broaches the issue of what to do if your child or teen, adult child, or spouse announces that he or she is gay. How do you handle that situation? What do you say? Who do you blame? Yarhouse delves into the incredibly controversial topic of reversing homosexuality, and he brings to the forefront the question on many people's minds: what causes homosexuality?

This book is well written, heavily notated, and thoroughly engaging. Yarhouse's conclusions are hard to argue, and even if you tried, he has the statistics to back it up. The book is a little difficult to pick up if you have only a few minutes, because he has packed every chapter with pages of information.

Every Christian needs to read this book, and every pastor needs to own and study it. That is not a simple recommendation, this is a crucial need. It will challenge everything you ever thought about sin and same-sex attraction. Get this book!

I received this book for free from Bethany House Publishers. I was not required to write a positive review as a condition of receiving this book, nor would they have been able to make me write one if I thought it was horrible. My opinions are my own and do not reflect the author or Bethany House Publishers.

The Way Home {DVD}

Red Five Entertainment

Randy Simkins is a husband and father torn between the demands of his job and commitment to his family. Asked by his wife Christal to watch their two-year-old son Joe for a few minutes. Randy is distracted by work and Joe disappears. Racked by guilt, Randy joins Christal in a desperate search for their missing son alongside hundreds of others from their church and community. Randy and Christal's strained marriage must now weather the ultimate test -- the potential loss of a child. The Way Home is the story of Randy's powerful spiritual journey back to love, faith and Godly understanding of what must always take priority in a man's life -- his family.

This is a story, not based on a true story, but it actually IS the true story of a child that disappeared, and the community rally that occurred to find him. Through the camera lens, we are introduced to the Simpkins family at a time when Randy is swamped with work, and Christal is resenting the time he spends away from the family. Although Randy is a loving father when he is home, he has to be home for it to matter. The family is preparing to go away on vacation, and Randy is given the task of putting little Joe into his car seat. Randy decides to let Joe ride around on his tricycle for a little bit before strapping him in, and this allows Randy some time to check his email. The next thing he knows, Joe is no longer on his tricycle. Joe is nowhere to be seen. The search is on, and the phone calls are made. People come from far and wide to help in the search for little Joe.

I hate to say it, but this movie seemed a bit formulaic, even though the story is original. The acting was good, but not quite solid, despite the star power of Dean Cain (Lois and Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman). There were times that the plot dragged along, but I think that was mainly because there just isn't enough material to cover 95 minutes when 80% of the film is the search for Joe. They could have chopped a good 20-35% of the search out of the film and added some solid character development, and that would have catapulted this picture into the realm of greatness. Some of the acting by the peripheral characters was less than quality, but it wasn't enough to keep me from liking this film.

The cinematography was superb, framing shots at interesting angles and using unusual effects to grab the viewer's attention. Due to the nature of the film, there wasn't much of a sub-plot, but what was there was well thought out and it creatively supported the main feature.

Overall, I think this is a quality family film that is a wonderful addition to anyone's collection, and it can even be used as a teaching tool for your children. I think the positives far outweigh the negatives, and unfortunately, the negatives are somewhat expected in the Christian genre of film. I absolutely recommend this film.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this DVD free as a part of the BookSneeze.com review bloggers program. Rosenberg

Tyndale House Publishers

Tension rises in the Middle East. As the apocalyptic leaders of Iran call for the annihilation of Israel and the United States, CIA operative David Shirazi ships into Tehran with one objective: Use all means necessary to disrupt Iran's nuclear weapons program -- without leaving American fingerprints and without triggering a regional war.
As David begins to infiltrate Iranian government circles, news spreads throughout the region of a mysterious cleric claiming to be the Islamic messiah known as the Mahdi, or the Twelfth Imam. News of his miracles, healings, signs, and wonders spread like wildfire, as do rumors of a new and horrific war.
With the prophecy of the Twelfth Imam seemingly fulfilled, Iran's military prepares a final strike that will bring about the End Of Days. Shirazi must take action to save his country and the world, but the clock is ticking.

This is my first experience with a book by Joel Rosenberg. I had no preconceived ideas about his writing, only a vague notion that The Twelfth Imam was about the end of days. What I found upon entering Rosenberg's world blew my mind. The Twelfth Imam starts out almost as a description of history. In 1979, the American embassy in Tehran was overthrown and 66 hostages were taken. Rosenberg weaves his characters through the actual history of that time, even bringing them through a narrow escape that allows two families to start their lives over in the United States. Rosenberg then moves us ahead through the history of Iran, the death of Ayatollah Khomeini, and the resurgence of Shia Islam into political power. Then, Rosenberg introduces a character that has the potential to be the Jack Ryan of the 21 century. The CIA catches wind of Iranian nuclear weaponry that may be in the final phases of manufacture and testing. They send one David Shirazi into Tehran to find out the truth of the matter. What he discovers is beyond belief. There is an integral connection between Iranian political power and the legends of the Twelfth Imam, the Mahdi, the prophesied Islamic messiah. David must find a way to neutralize the nuclear threat from Iran while keeping his involvement a secret from the religious and political leaders, all while dealing with severe inner personal conflicts that threaten to destroy his effectiveness as a CIA covert operative.

This book reminds me of a ski jump: It starts out with some speed, it quickly gains more momentum as the plot thickens, then you reach the point where you are committed -- you are going too fast to stop, and then . . .
This book made me laugh and cry. It was simultaneously tense and fast-paced, while also being laid back and refreshing. I literally got chills as I read this book and the desperate certainty of the plot settled in. This book is not for the faint of heart, nor is it something that should be read for relaxation. If you allow it, this book can challenge you and make you face a reality you may not have ever considered.

Or you can just put it back on the shelf and walk away.

The choice is up to you.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Tyndale House Publishers as part of their book review bloggers program. We sit in the bleachers, eat at diners, change diapers, and wear our favorite team's ball cap. Fan's don't wave when we pass. Servants don't scurry when we come home. Chauffeurs don't drive our cars; butlers don't open our doors or draw our baths. Doormen don't greet us, and security doesn't protect us. We are regular folk. And we wonder: does God use people like us. He did. God stampeded the first-century society with swaybacks, not thoroughbreds. Are you more dinghy than cruise ship? More stand-in than movie star? More blue jeans than blue blood? Congratulations. God changes the world with folks just like you.

This is the second Max Lucado book that I have read and I have to say that it is an incredible book. Lucado delves into a subject that, upon reflection, lay deep within the heart of every person: Living a life that matters. Moving effortlessly through the first few chapters of Acts, Lucado shows us how God used the very people that society discounted, as the catalyst to change the world. These men and women of God were nothing to the culture that they lived in: a tax collector, a prostitute, a bunch of fishermen -- yet they were pivotal in spreading the Gospel of Christ and shaping history.

I actually read this entire book in a day. Once you breach the first chapter, Max draws you in and points you toward challenge after challenge, daring you to deepen your relationship with Christ and, in so doing, broadening the ministry that He has placed you in. Don't misunderstand, you are eyeball-deep in a ministry whether you realize it or not. Your ministry is to be Christ to people around you - even when you can't stand to be around them. Max weaves personal anecdotes between scripture and stories of real-life people who simply trusted God to use them, and the incredible outcomes of that simple trust.

Lucado's unique writing style, mixed with his honest perspective on life, creates a book that encourages as it challenges, and uplifts as it subtly chastens. I found I had to ask myself several times why I knew what Lucado was saying, but I wasn't acting on it. Outlive Your Life is a call to all Christians to walk what we say we believe. To move like we say we do. To be what we say we are -- Followers of Christ.

I encourage everyone that wants to live their Christian life to the fullest to get this book, as well as Lucado's Fearless, and read them one after the other. You will walk away with a new understanding of God's will for you, I can promise you that.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their BookSneeze.com book review bloggers program. The year is 1772 and the family is crucial to the stability of the Russian empire. A dark man comes seeking to court one of the daughters, but the soldier finds something about him disturbing. Since his duty is the protection of the family he steps in and, in doing so, places himself into the midst of a struggle for power that flows deeper than anyone could imagine.

I have followed DekKer's writing through the Circle Series and the Paradise novels, through World War 2 Serbian battles between good and evil, demonic possession, and even a father battling for his daughter's love. I have seen Ted weave love within stories of passion, hate, fear, death, and redemption. I have devoured books that he has penned that deal with the realities of the Spiritual realm interacting with the physical realm in ways that I had never imagined. But I was in no way prepared for the story that Ted tells in Immanuel's Veins.
Ted tackles a concept that many have written about, yet none have fully understood. I found myself engaging a thought on where the book was heading, only to find that I was way wrong - yet also exactly correct. I even found myself blurting out a cry of incredulity as I processed the page. Nothing can prepare you for the story that is revealed within the pages of Immanuel's Veins.

Throughout the lines of Immanuel's Veins, the question is posed to the reader: What is Sacrificial Love? For this reader, there is but one answer - The giving of oneself totally and completely to another, even unto the point of death so that the other will not die. It seems a rather silly notion to give your life for another considering the reality that if you love someone enough to give your life for them, you will never see the fruits of your sacrifice. For me, the answer runs deeper. Death in this world is a trivial thing. What is important is eternity. If, by my death, you may see eternal life, I willingly give my life for you. THAT is sacrificial love.

Immanuel's Veins is a terrific read, but it is quite a departure from DekKer's usual style. This is the first book of his that I have read that is partially in first-person perspective. In fact, it bounces around from first to third-person throughout the book as the scene changes. Unfortunately, this was a distraction for me.
The story sucks you in and holds you tight as it takes you through Toma's plight, and I literally found myself rushing through the pages. Ted's insight in theological matters, combined with his earnest and sometimes brutal realism, make this story one that you will want to read time and time again. I know for a fact that I'll be revisiting Immanuel's Veins in the very near future.

If you would like to hear a podcast interview with Ted DekKer about Immanuel's Veins, click here.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze.com book review bloggers program. But in the sky, the heavens, the universe . . . there's a realm of beauty and creation only recently witnessed by man, thanks to the amazing feats of the Hubble Telescope. The Heavens Proclaim His Glory opens the curtain to a stage of unspeakable beauty -- a stage where only God Himself can receive all the credit. It's a display that will leave you speechless and ever-so-mindful of just how small we are in the vast scheme of His power and might.

I didn't quite know what to expect with this book. I heard that it had images from the Hubble Space Telescope mixed in with powems, quotes and other text from people, along with scripture. What I received was nothing short of a book filled with awe-inspiring images and inspirational messages. The truly beautiful thing about this book is that it's a double whammy: the images are much more inspirational than the text. Mix those images with scripture, and you hardly need poetry.

This book has given me a new appreciation for the wonders of space and God's handiwork, and will remain as one of my favorites for a very long time. The collection of quotes from Frank Peretti, Max Lucado, Kirk Cameron, Third Day, Abraham Lincoln, Stormie Omartain, and Franklin Graham (among others) are perfectly paired with scripture and serve as a reminder of His power and might. I highly recommend this book.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their BookSneeze.com book review bloggers program. Every season seems to bring fresh reasons for fear.
And it feels dreadful. Fear sucks the life out of the soul, curls us into an embryonic state, and drains us dry of contentment.
Wouldn't it be great to escape it? What if faith, not fear, was your default reaction to threats?

As I picked up this book I already knew that it would be cutting deep within me and exposing things that I didn't want to have to face. I knew that, even though I have been a solid Believer for years, I still had areas of fear that I was unwilling to give to God.
This book has made me stop and realize that, though I may be experiencing trials and situations that deserve a fearful response, I don't have to cave in and react in fear.

Just as the disciples in the boat turned to Jesus, so do I need to cling to Him.

This is a very well written book that draws you in - not because the writing is excellent, which it certainly is, but because Max delves deep into where you are as a believer and a person. His writing style is fantastic and, as this is my first Lucado book, I found myself eagerly turning the pages. If you have never read Lucado, This is a book for you.

Max has written a powerful book that cuts to the quick and, I wholeheartedly believe, it should be read by everyone. I don't care who you are, what background you come from, or even if you think that you can't learn anything new -- you need this book! I sure did!

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their BookSneeze.com book review bloggers program. A persuasive case can be made for General Dwight D. Eisenhower, who undertook history's most harrowing executive assignment: Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe on June 6th, 1944. In Lead Like Ike, business journalist and communications guru Geoff Loftus waves a fly-on-the-wall narrative from Ike's perspective as supreme allied commander overseeing the Normandy invasion. While swept into a gripping story that honors the sacrifice of all who fought and died on D-Day, you'll also be drawn to a cache of battle-tested strategies and tactics with direct applications to modern-day business leadership.

I love history, specifically the WWII era, so when I saw that I had a chance to read a book about the Supreme Commander of D-Day I jumped at the opportunity. I was not disappointed in the least.
Mr. Loftus creates a parallel between Eisenhower's strategies for winning the war with Germany and a company determined to win the war of competition with another company, and I think he does a very good job of constructing the analogy. He shows the successes and failures of Eisenhower's plans and uses them as examples of what to do and what not to do in the business world.
I don't know how effective this book would be to an executive or upper to middle-manager, as the points that Loftus makes are all common sense to the everyday, blue-collar worker, but in my experience not too many upper-management types are aware of these strategies.
This is a tremendous book -- simply for the historical content alone, so if you love history you will truly appreciate the biographical content. If you are upper management, I dare you to get this book, follow the strategies that are laid out, and see if your business flourishes.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their BookSneeze.com book review bloggers program. The Third Reich

by Eric Metaxas
Thomas Nelson Publishing

This story is a biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer - A theologian from Germany who came of age during the rise of the Third Reich, played a part in the conspiracy to assassinate Adolf Hitler, and died wholly devoted to the God he served with all of his heart.

I have never read a biography of such an incredible man before, and the task seemed daunting at first. The size of this book is tremendous and, despite all of the work that went into this story, I have no doubt that even more could have been written. A two and a half page bibliography and 20 pages of notes simply add to the flavor and rich texture that was Bonhoeffer's life.
Eric Metaxas has compiled a vast amount of information and put it together in a very well written story that flows as though you are reading a novel. As you read through the pages you will find yourself immersed in the life of one of the greatest theologians of the twentieth century. The life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer is one of intense devotion, determination, and tragedy. I highly recommend this book.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their BookSneeze.com book review bloggers program. Their world suddenly changes when a strange accident leaves them stranded with no car, no cell phone coverage, and no help in sight. They have no choice except to continue on foot. As darkness approaches, they round a bend and see a small sign at the top of a long gravel driveway: THE WAYSIDE INN.
The exhausted couple stands in front of an inviting house, complete with a gated stone wall, ancient oak trees, and a note welcoming weary travelers. Inside they find another couple with an equally troubling story about a similar accident. It seems that backwoods pranksters have made their day miserable. Still, they are safe . . .

Or so they think.

This is the first book that I have read from the collaboration of the two powerhouses of Frank Peretti and Ted Dekker. I have had the wonderful opportunity to read books that these two authors have written before, but this is their only collaboration. I loved the two books of Peretti's that I have read (This Present Darkness and Piercing The Darkness), and I have yet to read a Dekker book that doesn't move me, so I was really looking forward to sitting down with the sum of these two incredible geniuses. I was in no way disappointed.

I will admit that I saw the movie before reading the book, but it had been such a long time since I had seen it that I had forgotten just about everything about it, so that didn't ruin too much for me.
I really can't tell who wrote the majority of the book because it really reads like a stand-alone Dekker book AND a stand-alone Peretti book. I think that that truly shows the skill of the authors, and how they approached the story with a like mind. If you have read a book by either of these authors you will find yourself in familiar territory, stylistically. The boys introduce the protagonists right in the middle of a fight, and it goes downhill for them from there. They are driving through the backwoods of Alabama, on their way to a marriage counseling appointment, when they suddenly find themselves being chased by a Highway Patrol officer. As they slow down to pull over, the cruiser almost rear-ends them, then it speeds off. As they continue on from that disturbing scene, they meet an incredible set of circumstances that place them in an unforgettable evening with a very surprising set of people.

I am a fan of thrillers. That's one reason why I love Dekker's body of work so much; he is a spectacular writer. Even so, there is only one book of his that set me on edge while reading it, and that was the book 'Adam'. The only reason (that I can think of) that 'Adam' got to me was because it is a book dealing with the subject of demon possession. 'House' actually creeped me out. There is something about the way that they presented the subject matter that just got under my skin and I couldn't read too much of it before going to bed. Not that it gave me nightmares per sé, but that it was just unsettling. That, and that alone, is enough for me to recommend this book to anyone who loves thrillers! Obviously, because of the genre, you can expect that good triumphs over evil -- but it's in the journey that you find yourself sitting on the edge of your seat, jumping at any sound that your own house makes, and racing through the pages to see how it all turns out.

Get this book!

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their BookSneeze.com book review bloggers program. When the plan implodes, Sanso and his men attack the Gypsy settlement and burn it to the ground. During the blaze, Jenael is faced with a staggering choice. The impact of that moment changes her forever. As her past rises form the ashes, Jenael faces a new life-or-death choice. And this time, escape is not an option.

I had the opportunity to read the first collaborative effort of Ted Dekker and Erin Healy (Kiss --Thomas Nelson Publishing) last year and, based on my impression of that book, I was quite excited to read their latest effort. I was not dissappointed in the least. It was apparent that Burn was headed mainly by Erin Healy as the writing style is somewhat different from Dekker's, but it wasn't distracting. There were a few times that I stopped and scratched my head and asked why we needed to know that right now, but these are rough edges that will be sanded down by experience -- and from what I have read, Erin Healy has quite a career ahead of her. I will certainly be looking for more of her work in the coming years.

The story itself was really intruiging. A 17 year old girl, who is disenchanted by her past, is approached by a stranger and she is asked a simple question: "Do you love your father?" Her answer is defined by the choices that she makes over the next day, and those choices shatter everything she ever thought about herself and sets her on a path of self-discovery of epic proportions. In the end she must decide if she is willing to face her true self and reclaim a life that she had never known or continue down the road that she made for herself into destruction.

It's quite a page-turner, and I was surprised by the twist that came out of left field. It is definitely a book to get if you like Dekker, and it's a great introduction to Erin Healy if you have never read any of her work before. If you are looking for an escape into a world of deceit, suspense, and ultimately redemption, then I recommend Burn by Ted Dekker and Erin Healy.

Jack Daniels -- Spirit Of Tennessee Cookbook

By Lynne Tolley and Pat Mitchamore

Thomas Nelson Publishing

This is my first cookbook review, and I have to say that I was rather excited to try out some honest southern-style cooking. Since I don't drink, I wasn't sure how the introduction of Jack Daniels Whiskey to the cooking process would affect the final product, but I was plesantly surprised to find that it simply colored the finished dishes with a somewhat unique flavor.

Overall, the presentation of the book is tremendous. The cookbook is so much more than merely a bunch of recipes that are thown together. The authors of this book gathered pages and pages of history-- not just about Jack Daniels, but about Tennessee itself. There is a wonderful piece about Miss Mary Bobo's Boarding house in Lynchburg Tennessee, a nice short biography of Moore County Tennessee, and there's a Hardware and General Store that has such a beautiful story that I will make a point to stop by the next time I am in Tennessee.

All in all, I highly reccommend this book if you are cook, a lover of food, or a fan of down home-southern hospitality. I thought I was just getting a cookbook, but I got so much more.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their BookSneeze.com book review bloggers program. The love within the Circle is growing cold and betrayal is in the air. Thomas must find a way to prevent the Circle from crumbling, and keep his son from leaving the Circle and joining the Eramites -- the enemies of Horde and Albinos alike.

As a fan of Ted Dekker's novels, I was very excited to hear about this book touted as the sequel to White and the prequel to Black. Dekker delivers with this powerful story of betrayal, intruigue, suspense, and ultimately love beyond imagination. This story is very well written, and as is consistent with Ted Dekker's writing style, I found that I was unable to put this book down. From the Books of the Histories straight to the future, I was completely drawn in. But I must warn you: this is not book four completing the Circle Series. This book finishes the story from Black, Red, White, Showdown, Saint, and Sinner. This is book seven, and is a must have for any Dekker fan.

--------------------------------

Since I review for Thomas Nelson Publishers, I tried to keep it at just 200 words just like they asked me to. Do you realize how difficult it is to review something and keep your word count to just 200 words? For someone as loquacious as I, it is nigh impossible.

So, here is the rest of the review:

--------------------------------

When I got this book, I was expecting to read about the world of Thomas of Hunter, Leader of the Forest Guard, the chosen one of Elyon. It never occurred to me that Ted Dekker would wrap the entirety of the two series' (Circle Series and Paradise Series) together in one complete package. Dekker absolutely surpassed my greatest expectations with this novel.

Personally, I don't think that this book should be the first Dekker book that one is exposed to. The writing style is classic Ted Dekker, but it's a bit intense for the first-timers.

That and Ted quickly introduces the reader to the world of the future, and in so doing, reveals almost too much of the previous novels thereby removing some of the surprises that are inherent in the previous books. I would have preferred Ted to have written this one with the same format of Black, Red, White, Showdown, Saint, and Sinner. In each of the previous books, Ted treats them as though they are stand-alone stories, independent of each other. This one leaves you hanging unless you have read the rest of them.

The only other thing that bothers me about this book is that it almost seems like Ted rushed to get it completed, and didn't really delve into the meat behind the characters and story. He developed depth for some of the characters that we already knew, but there are new characters that seem almost thrown in so that they could fulfill their purpose in the story.

HOWEVER, the story as a whole was absolutely brilliant! If you are already a fan of Dekker's work, and have read through the Circle Series and the Paradise series, I HIGHLY recommend adding this novel to your library.

Ted takes us deep into the life of the Albinos ten years after Elyon last appeared, and the love within the Circle seems to be growing cold. It is a very timely story relating to the condition of the Church today, as the followers of Elyon are wondering where Elyon is, if He really exists, and if he is going to return to save his Bride. The similarities between where the Albinos are with Elyon, and the state of the Church today, are staggering. In a society where the news has reported that Protestant Christians have declined by 15% across the nation, it seems that more and more people are crying out like the Albinos: "God! Where are You!"

Dekker mines the depths of emotions and reveals the inner conflict between the leader of the Horde and his daughter, who has turned her back on everything her father believes, yet she loves him more than life. She, who used to be Horde, tries everything she can think of to show her father the truth about Elyon and the Drowning in Elyon's Pools, but his mind is lost to the Shataiki, and the great lies of Teeleh. Can Quorong, the Supreme Commander of the Horde, ever love his daughter again? The answer may surprise you.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their BookSneeze.com book review bloggers program.
